YuMi is ABB’s most celebrated collaborative robot. Shabana was the lead artist and the technical director and worked to produce an Audio/Visual piece in collaboration with YuMi.
The performance was based on the idea of light painting. Since YuMi is very flexiable, Shabana studied the joints and the possible movements that YuMi can reach and the limitations. According to the abilities of the two robotic arms, he designed a choreography that allows YuMi to show his maximum abilities.

In order to draw his movement, two glowing torches were handed to YuMi to trace the dance. After several expermintations, the torches needed special hands to be 3D printed so he can grab the handles tightly.
YuMi then communicated with the production platforms using UDP. At certain movements, the signals were sent to Ableton Live and mapped to trigger channels or manipulate effects parameters. The visuals were made by RGB camera detection and the image were manipulated live.
